Tributes are being paid to Dickie Bird, the legendary cricket umpire from Barnsley, who has died at the age of 92. Born Harold Bird in 1933, he began as a player with Yorkshire and Leicestershire before becoming one of the game’s most respected officials.

He went on to umpire 66 Test matches, 69 One-Day Internationals and three World Cup finals. Bird’s lifelong friendships with Sir Michael Parkinson and Sir Geoffrey Boycott were forged at Barnsley Cricket Club.
