Barnsley and Luton Town have each been fined £13,500 by the Football Association following a mass confrontation during their League One meeting last month. The incident happened after the final whistle of Luton’s 2-1 victory on 20 October. Both clubs admitted the charges.

Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Marie Tidball says a meeting with a Government minister has been scheduled over the future of the former Scout Dike outdoor activity centre. Campaigners want the Penistone site preserved and reopened for community and outdoor education use. The campaign is seeking to protect the site while options for its future are explored.

🚌 BUS DIVERSIONS IN JUMP, ROYSTON AND CRANE MOOR

Passengers are being warned of several current bus diversions across the borough. Cemetery Road in Jump is temporarily closed because of unannounced roadworks. Services 67, 67A, 67B and 67C are being diverted via Dearne Valley Parkway and are currently unable to serve Jump. In Royston, a fallen tree has made Summer Lane temporarily inaccessible. Service 57 is diverting via Church Street and Midland Road and cannot serve Meadstead Drive. Hand Lane at Crane Moor also remains closed for utility works until Tuesday 10 November, affecting services 23A, 24, 24A, 26 and 410.

🚆 DIRECT BARNSLEY TO LONDON TRAINS COULD RETURN IN FUTURE

Long-term plans to improve platforms at Barnsley railway station could eventually allow an experimental direct train service to London. The proposed platform improvements are pencilled in for between April 2028 and March 2029. However, no train operator, timetable or start date for a direct London service has been confirmed. The plans remain at the proposal stage and would require further approvals and funding.

🏫 NEW SEND EDUCATION STRATEGY GOES BEFORE CABINET

Barnsley Council will also consider its proposed SEND and Alternative Provision Sufficiency Strategy for 2026 to 2030 tomorrow. The strategy aims to ensure enough local education places and specialist support are available for children and young people who need additional help. If approved by Cabinet, it will be recommended to Full Council.

Barnsley Council's Cabinet will consider plans for an additional £10 million investment in the borough's roads tomorrow. A Barnsley support centre for women affected by domestic abuse is appealing for help as it faces the risk of closure. The Lotus drop-in centre, run by Resolute Women's Support Services, says a shortage of unrestricted funding is putting its future at risk. The charity has launched a £20,000 fundraising appeal to help keep the centre open. The service provides advocacy, counselling, peer support and practical help for women experiencing or recovering from domestic abuse.

🏥 BARNSLEY HOSPITAL REPORTS RECORD EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT DEMAND

Barnsley Hospital is urging residents to choose the most appropriate NHS service after its Emergency Department recorded its busiest-ever day. A total of 450 people attended on Monday 5 October. Eight of the hospital's ten busiest days have occurred during 2026, with overall attendances around ten per cent higher than last year. The hospital says around 35 per cent of adults attending have conditions which could safely be managed by another healthcare service.

💷 £100 ENERGY PAYMENT AND £2.39 MILLION REGENERATION FUNDING FOR BARNSLEY

Barnsley Council has outlined what the Government's Budget means for local households and businesses. Eligible households in Council Tax bands A to D will receive a £100 Household Energy Payment. Payments will be automatic for eligible households paying Council Tax by direct debit, while others will be able to apply. Barnsley has also been allocated £2.39 million from the Government's Derelict Buildings Fund. The small-business-rates threshold is also increasing from £12,000 to £18,000.

💻 MORE THAN £800,000 FOR AI TRAINING ACROSS BARNSLEY

Four Barnsley projects are to share more than £800,000 from the Government's AI Upskilling Challenge Fund. The funding, announced today, will help local people and businesses develop practical artificial intelligence skills. Training will target frontline health and social care workers, people working in construction, engineering and manufacturing, women returning to work, young people and small businesses. Barnsley College is among the organisations involved in delivering the programme.
