Cooper Gallery

The Cooper Gallery is the perfect place to discover stunning art and new exhibitions. Located in the heart of Barnsley town centre since 1914, the Gallery is free to all and all are welcome! Samuel Joshua Cooper purchased the Gallery building in 1912 when its occupants, the Holgate Grammar School, moved premises to Shaw Lane. His intention was to provide an art gallery for the people of Barnsley and to place his own art collection there for all to freely enjoy. Sadly, Samuel died in 1913 and did not live to see the opening of the Gallery in 1914. Before his death he had arranged for a board of Trustees to establish and maintain the Gallery and the collection of 275 paintings and drawings. The permanent art collection ranges from the 17th to 20th centuries and contains over 400 works. After the initial gift of 275 paintings by Mr Cooper, the Gallery also received several gifts of artworks from the visionary art collector Sir Michael Sadler. The Fox family, who were local brewers, donated paintings as well as funding the construction of the Gallery’s Fox Wing in 1934. The collection was further enriched in 1978 by the Addy Bequest and in 2001 by the donation of pictures previously belonging to the Sutherland brothers. The most recent addition to the Gallery is a selection of studio pottery collected by the local artist, Malcolm Whittaker.

Our experienced staff team is available to provide emotional, social, and practical support if you are in crisis or heading toward a crisis. You can come just for a chat, or to access one-to-one emotional support from trained mental health professionals. We also offer help in creating staying well and crisis plans, and support visitors to access other services and organisations that may be useful to them. This is a walk-in service – there’s no need to be referred. We also offer virtual support via telephone and video call. We work closely with other front-line healthcare professionals to ensure that people in emotional distress have a safe, supportive place to go to, with appropriate mental health support available. Our friendly cafe offers refreshment and relaxation to visitors to the farm, and to people visiting the nearby Worsbrough Country Park or passing on the Trans-Pennine trail. Our cafe opening times are 10.00am-3.30pm every day, breakfast is available 10am-11am and our lunch menu is available 11am-2pm. Pastries, desserts, ice creams and hot and cold drinks are available until 3.30pm. We are closed over the Christmas period. Situated in beautiful surroundings next to Worsbrough Country Park, we are located just across the road Dove Valley Trail section of the Trans-Pennine Trail.

Worsbrough Mill Country Park is a 240-acre stunning nature reserve and home to a vast array of wildlife and natural habitats. The pathways offer a range of walks, short and long, that lead you through Green Flag and SSSi awarded green spaces that include pretty meadowlands and wildflowers. You will discover a range of public art like beautifully crafted benches, willow sculptures and intricately designed bird hides. At the heart of the Country Park is a 60-acre reservoir, a perfect spot for anglers and bird watchers. Activities like swimming, paddle boarding, and other water sports are not allowed at Worsbrough Reservoir. The Barnsley and District Amalgamated Angling Society have access to the site for fishing, and anyone interested in this should contact them directly.
