Health clinics opened in shopping centres in Wakefield and Barnsley have increased footfall in the local area, according to NHS leaders. Daniel Elkeles, CEO of NHS Providers, stated that the shift towards community care away from hospitals could boost local businesses and shops. The clinics, which offer treatments such as blood tests, ultrasounds and X-rays, have been used by over 120,000 patients in the past 18 months and businesses nearby have seen increased footfalls. Health minister Stephen Kinnock said the Wakefield centre was "changing how people access care". In contrast, a health centre is planned for the Alhambra Shopping Centre in Barnsly, which will host hospital eye specialists and other outpatient services.
