Children and young people aged 5 to 18 living in Barnsley can now access free bus travel between 7am and 9pm, seven days a week. Journeys must start or end in the Barnsley local authority area and be within South Yorkshire.
The Barnsley MiCard scheme, one of the first of its kind in England, aims to help young people travel independently, develop life skills, and access education, leisure, and work opportunities.
Over 11,000 young people now hold a MiCard, with applications still open online or by post through the Travel South Yorkshire website.
The scheme is funded by a £5 million investment from Barnsley Council and up to £1 million from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. All local bus operators in Barnsley are taking part.
The two-year pilot supports the Great Childhoods Ambition, with hopes to expand across South Yorkshire in the future.
