Barnsley will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day this week with a special service at the town hall war memorial.
The event will take place at 11am on Friday 15 August, bringing the community together to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country during the Second World War.
VJ Day, which stands for Victory over Japan Day, commemorates the day in 1945 when Imperial Japan surrendered to the Allies, effectively bringing the Second World War to an end. While the war had concluded in Europe three months earlier, conflict in the Pacific continued until Japan’s surrender, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The service at Barnsley Town Hall will include moments of reflection to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East and across the world.
Organisers say the gathering is an opportunity for residents to pay tribute to the men and women who endured the final stages of the war and to reflect on the significance of peace.
