Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane faces important selection decisions ahead of Saturday’s League One home fixture against Bolton Wanderers, with questions lingering over the availability of key defender Maël de Gevigney.
The French centre-half, a mainstay in the Reds’ backline, missed Tuesday’s EFL Cup victory over Fleetwood Town due to an ankle sprain. Hourihane described the absence as precautionary, noting that swelling around the injury was the main concern, but admitted the player remains “touch and go” for the weekend.
With Marc Roberts already sidelined until at least mid-autumn through injury, Barnsley’s defensive resources are stretched. The possible return of Jack Shepherd, now eligible after serving a one-match suspension, could provide some welcome stability if de Gevigney is ruled out.
In midfield and attack, Hourihane has fewer concerns. The side that secured a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Burton Albion last weekend could be retained, though Jon Russell and Reyes Cleary are both pushing for starting spots after impressive recent performances.
Barnsley come into the match full of confidence, having made a perfect start to the season with back-to-back league wins—3-1 away at Plymouth Argyle and the dramatic late victory over Burton—plus a penalty shootout triumph against Fleetwood in the EFL Cup.
The fixture also continues Hourihane’s strong start as permanent head coach, following his appointment in April 2025. Bolton, who finished in the top six last season, are expected to provide a stern test, but Oakwell’s atmosphere and Barnsley’s current momentum could prove decisive.
Kick-off at Oakwell is set for 3pm on Saturday, 16 August.
