A Barnsley schoolgirl is preparing for the adventure of a lifetime — and she’s working hard to make it happen.

Thirteen-year-old Evie, a Year 8 student at Outwood Academy, has secured a place on a four-week expedition to Borneo in the summer of 2027 with Camps International. The trip will see her join a small group of students taking part in community development, environmental and wildlife conservation projects, while also facing physical and personal challenges.

Evie explained:

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give something back, learn new skills, and make a positive difference. I’ll be helping local communities, protecting wildlife like orangutans, and even trekking through the Bornean jungle.”

The expedition will involve building and improving schools, homes and water systems in rural villages, supporting environmental projects such as coastal clean-ups, and contributing to conservation efforts for endangered species. One of the highlights will be a visit to the world-renowned Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, which plays a vital role in protecting the animals and their habitats.

To fund the trip — which costs around £5,200 — Evie is already rolling up her sleeves. She will be doing a sponsored climb up Mount Snowdon and is offering her time for odd jobs in the local area, from babysitting and dog walking to gardening and shopping. She is also planning car washes, cake sales, and t-shirt sponsorships with support from local businesses.

Evie added:

“I know it’s going to be a big challenge, but I’m determined to work hard to get there. Every bit of support means so much.”

Residents and businesses who want to support Evie’s journey can donate via her fundraising page, sponsor her expedition t-shirt, or hire her for odd jobs in the community.
