Barnsley booked their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup after a tense penalty shoot-out win over Fleetwood Town at Oakwell last night.

The League One sides played out an entertaining 2–2 draw over 90 minutes and extra time before Barnsley held their nerve from the spot to seal a 5–4 shoot-out victory.

Fleetwood took the lead in the first half, but Barnsley hit back to level the score. The visitors struck again after the interval, only for the Reds to equalise late on and force extra time. Despite chances at both ends, neither team could find a winner in open play. In the deciding shoot-out, Barnsley converted all but one of their penalties, while Fleetwood saw their final spot-kick saved, sparking celebrations among the home crowd.

Barnsley head coach Neill Collins praised his side’s resilience, saying they “showed great character to come from behind twice and keep calm under pressure.”

Fleetwood manager Charlie Adam admitted the defeat was hard to take but said his side could “take plenty of positives from the performance.”

The Reds will discover their second-round opponents later this week, with the next Carabao Cup fixtures scheduled for the week commencing 25 August.
