Four of Barnsley’s much-loved green spaces have been recognised with the prestigious Green Flag Award, an international mark of excellence for well-managed parks and green spaces.
Elsecar Park and Local Nature Reserve, Cannon Hall Parklands, Locke Park, and Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve have all been awarded for their high standards in cleanliness, safety, accessibility, and community involvement.
This year marks a milestone for Locke Park, which has received its first-ever Green Flag Award. Elsecar Park celebrates its 18th award, highlighting years of consistent excellence. The Green Flag Award recognises sites that offer welcoming, well-maintained environments that are open and accessible to all.
Each of the awarded sites brings something unique to the borough:
- Elsecar Park and Local Nature Reserve is praised for its landscaped gardens, community events, and its connection to the Elsecar Heritage Centre. Its tranquil lake and recreational facilities make it a valued local retreat.
- Cannon Hall Parklands attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and is one of England’s most visited free attractions. The park features family-friendly trails, walled gardens, and fairyland experiences, all set in a historic landscape.
- Locke Park, located just a mile from Barnsley town centre, offers 47 acres of open green space. Named after railway engineer Joseph Locke, the park features a historic tower, bandstand, bowling club, café, and beautifully maintained gardens.
- Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve is recognised for its strong focus on conservation and biodiversity, providing a vital sanctuary for wildlife and a peaceful setting for visitors.
Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“These awards are a testament to the hard work of our Parks Team, volunteers, Countryside Rangers, Museums and Neighbourhoods Teams. Their dedication ensures these green spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for all.”
Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, added:
“Winning four Green Flag Awards again this year is a fantastic achievement. Our parks play a vital role in the well-being of our communities, offering spaces for relaxation, exercise, and connection with nature.”
