The Barnsley Main Heritage Group has created a new memorial garden to honour miners who lost their lives or were seriously injured at the former Oaks Colliery site.
The project was supported by a £1,000 grant from South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation. The garden includes space for quiet reflection, as well as information about local mining history. A memorial poem has also been displayed, marking the site of the Oaks Colliery disaster of 1866 – the worst mining disaster in England. The funding also allowed for research into the names of miners who died in the colliery.
