A proposal to build a drive-thru Burger King restaurant on Wombwell Lane in Barnsley has been turned down by Barnsley Council.
The application, which sought to construct a 2,497 sq ft (232 sq m) fast food outlet on the southern section of the Tesco retail park, was refused due to a range of concerns – with public health and environmental impact cited as key factors.
Planning officers noted the proposed site’s proximity to a nearby primary school, situated within 400 metres, as a significant issue. The area already records above-average childhood obesity rates, and under Barnsley’s local planning policies, restrictions apply to hot food takeaways near schools to help encourage healthier lifestyle choices.
In addition to health concerns, the proposed building design was described as “over-dominating” in the context of its surroundings. Council officers also raised issues around the potential impact of noise, fumes and vehicle vibrations caused by drive-thru traffic, warning that it could affect both the appearance of the retail park and the amenity of nearby residents.
The applicant now has up to six months to appeal the decision if they wish to challenge the outcome.
