Barnsley Football Club Signs Tennai Watson on One-Year Deal
Barnsley Football Club has confirmed the signing of Tennai Watson on a one-year contract.
The 28-year-old right-back joins the Reds following a spell at Charlton Athletic, where he made 19 appearances during their promotion-winning campaign from Sky Bet League One. Watson brings a wealth of experience at this level, having started his professional career at Reading, where he made his debut in August 2016. He has also featured for AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons before making a deadline day move to The Valley in September 2023. Over the course of his time at Charlton, Watson racked up 61 appearances, including a role in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
Sporting Director Mladen Sormaz expressed his enthusiasm about the signing:
“We’re very pleased to bring Tennai to Oakwell. He’s an experienced player at this level, with a strong track record in League One. His versatility and professionalism make him a great fit for our squad, and we’re confident he will add quality and depth to our defensive options this season.”
Head Coach Conor Hourihane also welcomed the addition:
“Tennai is a player who knows what it takes to be successful in this division. He’s athletic, disciplined and brings a competitive edge that will benefit the whole group. We’re looking forward to working with him and integrating him quickly into the squad as we prepare for the remainder of the season ahead.”
Speaking after the move, Watson shared his excitement:
“I’m buzzing, really excited. This is a big club with great fans and I can’t wait to get underway. I spoke to the gaffer; he has a clear vision of how I can fit into things. It’s definitely somewhere that wants to achieve something, and that aligns with me and what I want to do.”
