Oliver Coppard, mayor of the South Yorkshire CA, has proposed that mayors should have a role in 11-plus education to tailor the curriculum to the local economy.
Speaking at a Centre for Cities event at the Labour party conference, Coppard stated that he wants to be able to match our economy with our skills base.
He also highlighted South Yorkshire's advanced manufacturing cluster, but said young people often don't know about the careers it offers.
Coppard believes that the more mayors involved in this conversation, the more effective it will be.
