Rotherham is receiving £222,000 through the Government's Good Food Neighbourhoods programme.
The national programme is worth £10 million and Rotherham is one of the local authority areas selected to receive funding.
The money is intended to help people access healthier and more affordable food.
Rotherham Council says it can build on work already taking place across the borough to make sure surplus food reaches people who need it and affordable locally sourced produce is available in more places.
Potential projects nationally include community food shops, social supermarkets, mobile greengrocers, community kitchens, lunch clubs and cooking and nutrition projects.
The funding is intended to do more than simply provide emergency food.
The wider ambition is to improve health, reduce food inequality, reduce social isolation, help people develop skills and give families more access to affordable nutritious food.
The exact Rotherham projects have not yet been confirmed.
