Councillors will scrutinise plans on Wednesday 7 October to begin preparing a completely new Local Plan for Rotherham.
The Local Plan is one of the most important long-term planning documents the council produces.
It will eventually help determine where future homes, businesses, roads, services and green spaces can be developed across the borough.
It will also help shape which areas should be protected from development.
The Overview and Scrutiny Management Board is due to consider the plans on Wednesday 7 October, ahead of the proposals going to Cabinet on Monday 12 October.
Councillors are being asked to support formally beginning preparation of the new Rotherham Local Plan under new national planning regulations.
If Cabinet agrees, the council intends to publish a formal Notice of Intention to Commence by Friday 30 October.
Papers being considered on Wednesday 7 October also include proposals for consultation on a further matter.
