New research has highlighted the long-term challenge around opportunities for some young people in Barnsley.
Analysis by the Centre for Cities of the 2021 Census puts the proportion of 16 to 24-year-olds in Barnsley who were not in education, employment or training at 17%.
That places Barnsley among the five highest rates across urban England in the analysis.
Barnsley shares the 17% figure with Doncaster, Bradford and Middlesbrough, while Blackpool recorded the highest rate at 21%.
The figures are from the 2021 Census and do not represent a measurement of Barnsley's position today, but they highlight the importance of creating good-quality jobs, training and opportunities for young people locally.
The research points to more jobs, more apprenticeships and training, and better careers support as the areas that would make the biggest difference.
