Barnsley Essentials has sent an open letter to Barnsley Council asking for a formal response about safety and ongoing disruption at Barnsley Bus Station.
The letter refers to a post shared in the Barnsley Past & Present Facebook group describing young people reportedly causing disruption and interfering with the lifts and escalators. It also notes reports of an alleged assault on Friday and other recent concerns about problems at the station.
Barnsley Essentials says the Facebook post describes one person's account and has not been independently verified by us, but adds that it reflects wider concerns raised by members of the public about safety, access and the pressure these incidents may place on staff.
The letter asks the council what action is being taken to address reports of antisocial behaviour and violence at the bus station, which organisation is leading that work, and how the council is working with the police, station operators and security staff.
It also asks how reports of faults or damage to lifts and escalators are dealt with, particularly when passengers rely on them for access, and whether there is a plan with clear actions and timescales to improve safety and prevent further disruption.
Barnsley Essentials says passengers and staff deserve to feel safe, and people who depend on the lifts and escalators need confidence that they will be available. The council has been asked to respond publicly and explain what action is being taken.
