Barnsley Council could approve a significant expansion in its use of automation, digital tools and artificial intelligence at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday 7 October.
Cabinet is being asked to approve an Innovation and AI plan designed to improve services and support £1.865 million in planned efficiencies between 2026 and 2029.
One of the biggest proposed investments is £445,500 for a replacement customer contact system. The proposal would introduce a Microsoft Customer Contact platform which the council says could make it easier for residents to contact services, improve how enquiries are handled and give staff better access to information.
The wider plan also looks at artificial intelligence, automation, digital forms, better use of data, redesigned council processes, and a simpler and more resilient technology network.
The council says the aim is to reduce duplication, improve value for money and create simpler ways for residents, businesses and staff to access services. It also wants to explore how technology could help services become more proactive and personalised.
The plan has not yet been approved. Cabinet considers it on Wednesday 7 October.
