A decision this week could start one of the biggest planning exercises Barnsley will undertake for years.
Barnsley Council's Cabinet is due to consider formally beginning work on a new Local Plan on Wednesday 7 October.
The Local Plan ultimately determines where future homes, businesses, services and infrastructure can be developed across the borough.
The council says it wants to take a brownfield-first approach. But it also acknowledges there is not enough brownfield land available to meet future housing requirements, meaning development on parts of the Green Belt will need to form part of the conversation.
Early public consultation is proposed for January. This is the beginning of a long process rather than decisions being taken this week about individual sites, but the finished plan could shape Barnsley for years.
