A 57-year-old Barnsley man is due at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 9 October charged with the murder of Russell Baxter.
Russell, 41, was found with multiple injuries at a property on Wingfield Road, Athersley, on 3 September. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
South Yorkshire Police say Phillip Benson, 57, has now been charged with murder.
The murder charge replaces an earlier charge of grievous bodily harm with intent, following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.
Benson remains on remand and is due before Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 9 October.
The charge is an allegation and has not been proven.
Russell's family continue to be supported by specialist officers.
