Yorkshire Water has objected to a proposed 270-strong housing development in the Dearne Valley, stating that the sewer system in the area could not handle the additional burden. The site was not included in Barnsley Council's list of potential sites for major development in 2019, but this makes it easier for developers to obtain permission on sites like the Cemetery Road fields. Yorkshire Water cited the fact that the site had not been included in the council's calculations, leading to concerns that the public sewer network and receiving wastewater treatment works could not cope with anticipated foul flows. The company also stipulates new plans for dealing with waste water should be approved before any development was approved. Education officials do not object to the scheme, but suggest a contribution of over £1m would be needed to help compensate for the strain on schools, primary and secondary students. Highways officials have also raised concerns about the proposed access to the site.
