Barnsley MPs have welcomed national changes which will expand employees' rights to bereavement leave. The Government says new statutory rights are due to come into effect from April 2027.
They will extend protection beyond the existing parental bereavement system. The reforms will also give women and their partners who experience pregnancy loss before 24 weeks the right to up to two weeks of unpaid leave.
The wider changes will also cover the loss of close family members including spouses, partners, parents, adult children and siblings.
This is a national employment-law change which Barnsley MPs have welcomed, rather than a Barnsley Council policy.
