Oakwell could be in the frame to host rugby league's World Club Challenge after Sydney Roosters were crowned NRL champions.
The Roosters beat Newcastle Knights 19-18 in the NRL Grand Final, setting up a possible meeting with Super League champions Wakefield Trinity.
Oakwell, the home of Barnsley FC, has been discussed as a possible venue because of its larger capacity and Wakefield owner Matt Ellis's Barnsley links.
The fixture has not yet been formally confirmed and the venue remains undecided, with other options also being considered.
