Sheffield Wednesday have booked their place in the knockout stages of the EFL Trophy after beating Sunderland Under-21s 2-0 at Hillsborough.
Jaden Heskey scored his first senior professional goal before Barry Bannan added Wednesday's second.
Manager Henrik Pedersen made six changes but still named an experienced side and used the fixture to give further opportunities to younger members of his squad.
Pedersen says the competition can play an important role in bringing academy players closer to first-team football while maintaining a winning culture.
