School attendance in Barnsley remains below council targets, despite signs of improvement.
Primary attendance was reported at 94.4% against a 95% target, while secondary attendance stood at 89% against a 92% target.
The council says the gap is narrowing and there has been a reduction in the number of children whose attendance is below 90%.
The issue remains a concern because regular school attendance is a statutory expectation and absence can affect children's learning, safeguarding and long-term outcomes. The council says targeted work with schools and families will continue as part of its aim to make sure children are in school every day.
