A recent tyre safety event at Tesco in Stairfoot, Barnsley highlighted just how important regular tyre checks are, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue says.
Of the 28 vehicles checked, 23 had underinflated tyres, while three were below the legal tread-depth limit and five had tyres in poor condition due to issues such as age or cracking.
The joint event brought together the fire service's Prevention and Education team, National Highways, Barnsley Council and TyreSafe representatives, who offered motorists free tyre checks and advice ahead of the colder, wetter months.
The fire service's advice is to check your tyre pressures regularly, keep an eye on tread depth, and look out for cracks, damage and signs of ageing. A quick check could help keep you and other road users safer this winter.
